Vision in Occupational Health
Assessment of vision in occupational health covers half a dozen basic measurements:- visual acuity
- contrast sensitivity
- visual field
- colour vision
- visual adaptation
- motion perception
- oculomotor functions and accommodation
Presbyopia and visual ergonomics related to it are an important question in many countries where manual labor diminishes and office type work increases.
In occupational evaluation, measurement of motion perception would be useful in many problem cases. It is now used in clinical research and requires further development to become available as a routine clinical measurement. Measurement of flicker sensitivity gives some information about the function of the magnocellular pathway. Visual symptoms and problems in occupational health care are often quite subtle and easily overlooked. Thorough understanding of visual pathways is essential in the assessment of visual capabilities for different work situations.
